Choice of Kagan appears dubious

I read Sen. Jeff Session's Alabama Voices column concerning Elena Kagan. Ms. Kagan's most obvious accomplishment seems to be her position as dean at Harvard Law School.

While there, she garnered a significant amount of publicity and controversy because she closed the on-campus military office, banning recruitment . According to Sen. Sessions, Ms. Kagan did not initiate the banning actions, but when she became dean, she re-instituted the ban, overriding the congressional Solomon Act.

If Harvard was 100 percent private, I suppose there would be some room for a private property argument. If Ms. Kagan were not nominated to the Supreme Court by a president who never served in the armed services, and is himself controversial, there would probably be no argument.

Many of us who have voluntarily served our country, even when there was a draft, take great offense at the possibility of a person who obviously holds the American military with disdain being selected to a lifetime appointment as a Supreme Court justice.

It is quite clear to most Americans that the freedom of educational institutions and also religion is not derived from groups of armed teachers and preachers.

While Ms. Kagan was gathering academic credentials and controversial accolades, others were "standing on the wall," protecting her personal lifestyle and ambitions.

Paraphrasing Jack Nicholson, I would prefer she had just taken up a weapon and stood a watch.

Founders far more insightful

The Constitution of the United States of America, Article IV, Section 4: "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature, cannot be convened), against domestic Violence."

I suggest that many citizens of Arizona believe they are being invaded, and from news reports there is ample cause to believe alien violence abounds, directly attributable to a constant influx of non-U.S. citizens ( illegal aliens).

It is absolutely astounding how insightful our founders were, while our current leaders have such shallow regard and respect for our own citizenry.

May I suggest that all Americans buy what they can from the state of Arizona, in an attempt to offset the lunacy of those states with holier-than-thou attitudes. Border Americans are currently suffering the results of unresponsive Washington politicians, who obviously believe the rights of Americans are less important than those of foreign lawbreakers.

Why even involve government?

I have no problem with a national day of prayer. I don't think anyone needs my affirmation, nor have they asked for it. I would oppose an official congressional day.

I have been listening and reading about some of the opposing points of view concerning the idea. It had dawned upon me that currently there are probably more Christian-type religions practiced in the USA than others, but others are growing in number.

Our government maintains extensive legal rules and laws to prevent racial profiling, but thinks nothing apparently of lifting one religion above another. I can already hear the arguments of why there should be one, so spare me.

If there is an official day of prayer, what does that tell other religions? I don't see any reason for the government to even be concerned. Just look how long it took to elect a Catholic president and to have a Jew on the Supreme Court, much less a black to the highest office, whose religious affiliation is regularly challenged.

We know followers of some religions are willing to die for their beliefs, and they aren't all Christian. Some religions have mandatory prayer every day. Maybe Congress can just pass a law that everyone has to pray every day. About what can be optional.

Real friendship disregards race

I enjoyed Craig Cornwell's Alabama Voices column "City as classroom," regarding geriatric Australian tourists with Friendship Force International.

I think that all Caucasians have at one time or another have uttered the statement "I have a black friend." He mentioned that he is a " boycott baby" of the 1950s civil rights era, so he did not experience some of the truly segregated laws and mores of the past centuries.

He quotes a retired black judge, who suggests people should "get past manufactured integration exercises" and just be friends. I hope the Australian visitors learned what Montgomery is like, which is probably a lot like all cities. I certainly would enjoy a trip to Australia to learn about the division of the cities and the Outback.

I hope the travelers learned that Montgomery is a progressive, friendly place to live, and plagued by the same social problems that are worldwide.

The retired judge makes a significant point concerning relationships, as does Mr. Cornwell about the Australian request to be hosted by African-Americans. May I suggest to them that many of us have overcome ethnic bias and bigotry. Many people of color actually have Caucasian friends, with whom they are not ashamed to associate. I personally have several friends who have tolerated me for decades. That is why they are friends. I have always thought that is what friendship means.

Public salaries hardly secret

A recent letter to the Advertiser said the writer was appalled that school system employees' names, positions and salaries were printed in a news article. The writer said it was "disrespectful" to the whole system and the Advertiser owes an apology to Montgomery Public Schools.

I'm a retired teacher. I do not understand the outrage manifested by the writer. I was paid with tax monies for 33 years. The salary was no secret.

Uniforms send weak message

I realize that my opinion concerning uniforms for public school children is one of the least concerns of the world.

During the 1950s, I was aware that the Catholic school children in Montgomery wore uniforms. This immediately identified them in after-school situations, such as riding the bus home. I always supposed it was a Catholic thing.

By now, I think we all know the rationale behind the superintendent's push for total involvement of the uniform dress code by all public schools. Let me assure you, uniforms did not prevent the ferocious fight I broke up between two girls about three-quarters of a mile from Capitol Heights school, while a crowd of uniformed children apparently egged it on. Khaki pants do not prevent the boys from exposing their underwear when no authority is present.

I believe that uniforms in the public schools represent a philosophy that says we are unable to establish respectful, dignified, reasonable rules of dress with parents and children. I think the process says the children actually control the situation, not parents or the school administration. Various administrators will pat their own backs while making frilly reports of enhanced control and behavioral improvement. Trust me, the students will be working their own agenda.

If I may be allowed a paraphrase: It isn't the color of their clothes that is important, it is the content of their character development.

Charter schools flawed concept

The government never ceases to amaze me. Many politicians and state educators want the federal government to give money, our money, to establish special education concepts, commonly known as charter schools.

These tax-funded, allegedly autonomous schools are supposed to enhance and strengthen a floundering public education program, thus correcting and/or bolstering educational systems which are already supported by federal programs (like No Child Left Behind), tax monies (our money), politicians (seeking our money) and state educators (paid by our money).

Uniforms' benefit questionable

I realize that uniforms in the public schools are supposed to level the playing field, make schools safer and remove the decision of what to wear each day.

Lanier teachers, in the 1950s , were the dress code. Pants up, shirts tucked in, no Bermuda shorts. Dresses, skirts and blouses were demure. Parents backed the teachers. There was no recourse, no back talk, no exceptions; or else.

Many people say that uniforms remove the supposed stigma of wearing old clothes or being poor. Uniforms are supposed to help self-image grades, and school behavior.

All students know where they all live. They know who is "free breakfast/lunch." Students will find a way, be it jewelry, bracelets, shoestrings, shoes, nail polish, belts, etc, to make a statement that they are the in crowd and others are not.

Obviously there is nothing inherently wrong or particularly distasteful to vote in uniforms, but it will require additional wardrobe expense. Children will not wish to wear the uniform at other times. The bell rings, and shirts come out and pants pockets drop to ankle level. Check Capitol Heights Junior High School or Lee High any afternoon when the bell rings.

There is a half-life for all change. One can only wonder at the next innovative superficial changes implemented to replace parental responsibility.

Obviously passing a law that a particular action is illegal does not stop the activity. If that were true, prostitution would be a thing of the past and politicians would be servants of the electorate.

Passing laws almost impossible to enforce might seem as if one is spitting into the wind. Thus, we have the new law prohibiting texting while driving a moving vehicle.
There is a propensity to call an event in which two vehicles crash unexpectedly an accident. Almost without exception it is not an accident, it is deliberate. If your child dies by a drunk driver, what do you call it? Drugs? Plain stupidity and reckless driving?

I suggest the following: All drivers involved in collisions, regardless of obvious circumstances, and occupants be asked to volunteer their cell phone numbers. If they refuse, it should be noted on the police report, along with all legal names of all individuals in both vehicles. One may text, talk on their phone, borrow one while driving or simply keep checking the incoming because they are so important. I even see the local police doing it regularly.

If the facts indicate that cell phones were in use during the crash, the aggrieved should take all possible legal steps to prove negligence, and/or possibly negligent homicide/manslaughter.

Excuse me, I think I hear a ring tone company calling.

Pundits don't 'get' Brown's triumph

I watched a TV news program during the followup of Scott Brown's defeat of the Democratic candidate. The program is hosted by Rachel Maddow and the guest was Chris Matthews.

Chris, Rachel and a Ms. Kellie O'Donald tried, as best they could, to put a negative spin on a stunning success. Chris even mentioned the truck that Mr. Brown drives. He even went so far to say, " The election narrowed as the night went on. It might have been different in a couple of days."

I think that "they" still believe that the people who voted for Scott Brown robbed them. I don't believe for a second that they think Americans voted to change the values. Now they are even accusing Martha Coakley, the Democrat, of being the problem. She ran a faulty campaign. Ain't hindsight wonderful?

Consider issues in charter schools

There is a significant amount of interest, local reporting and statewide discussion regarding charter schools. The premise is that certain schools can take taxpayers' money with a mandate, paralleling private school organization.

Giving the latitude of almost total control of curriculum, teaching personnel and academic environment sounds very appealing. Longer hours, more teaching days and higher expectations would seem, at first blush, to be where one would want a child enrolled.

One might re-evaluate the original purpose of the public schools. One might consider that a charter school is a tax-supported system, oriented toward transition into college . Is college inherently the purpose of public education?

Consider the aspects of special ed, handicapped, emotionally disturbed, problem children, nurses, class size, control of staff, teacher hiring/firing, transportation and salaries. Other public schools must.

The problems, for some, may be solved by a charter system. It seems much more reasonable for the state to initiate strong control, parents to demand excellence and the AEA to concede that being hired does not make a person a true, dedicated professional.

Airport screeners pick questionable targets

I do not write this thinking I can either add to or dissect the apparent debacle, which allowed an obviously murder-oriented terrorist on board an American transatlantic flight. Some reports continue to comment that he was the "alleged" bomber. I cringed at Ms. Napolitano's comment that "the system worked."

What I do know is the screeners will move a little old lady, maybe 82 years old, 4 feet 11 inches tall, in a white jumpsuit, out of line. They will take her transparent lexan cane and run it through the X-ray machine.

Meanwhile, they will make her remove her Velcro, diabetic-type shoes, slowly totter through the metal scanner and then make her walk over to and stand on the footprint pad while doing a full body scan. I fully expected her to be whisked away for a full body cavity search.

All the while a TSA agent was standing within my comfort zone, staring at me. I suppose he was looking for me to squirm or maybe break into a sweat. I cleared unchallenged.

When they finished with "Grandma Moses," I walked over and quietly whispered to her as she shakily replaced her shoes, "You are the most suspicious possible terrorist I have ever seen." Without hesitation she looked up and replied, " It takes one to know one."

Hairstyles, names also become issues

I understand the frustration of the teacher (a female) who was so tired of a 7-year-old girl playing with a beaded braid that she cut it off.

One year, a 6-year-old in my class had her hair braided the same way, as if she had a veil. I asked the child to tell her mother how distracting it was for the girl trying to do "seat work" while the beads bounced across her eyes.

The mother's reply, as I recall, was essentially "Don't worry about it." I wrote her a note, with the same results.

My estimation of the situation was that the mother was more concerned with "cuteness" than with being told what was good for her child's academic progress. The principal eventually reasoned with the woman.

That reminds me of parents not wanting their children called by their names, but only by nicknames. It took some of the children awhile to adjust to answering to their real name, as it did for "Big Mama." And you thought AYP and global warming were all teachers have to worry about.

Anthem, dance routine in conflict

I did not attend the Christmas parade, but I have observed the majorette routine which one writer compared to a bump-and-grind routine. May I respectfully suggest this routine, the attitudes, and the administrative responsibilities controlling school extracurricular activities, did not present the day before the parade.

I suspect that the administration knew about the routine, which exposes an underlying philosophy. I believe, from the office of superintendent on down, the African-American culture has decided that the school system belongs to the majority. I believe the majority wishes to disavow a connection with past cultures and use the schools to infuse personal racial agendas, all done with a certain assurance of impunity.

We read about inappropriate dancing at school functions, the early morning shooting at an off-school dance; we observe the "sagging" thug look and are forced at times to listen to what many of us think is filthy music, booming from "hoopdies" with $2,000 rims.

Granted, there is freedom of expression and speech we all enjoy as American, but there remains a civic responsibility, which seems to be overlooked. As a retired teacher I can attest to hearing about rude, racially motivated attacks upon teachers of both cultures.

Lanier's anthem says "... and before thy shrine of knowledge, we will kneel to thee ..." Somehow, bumping and grinding a booty does not seem to fit the music.

Caring at center of some decisions

Your letter concerning the tragic death of Jim DeBortoli are well stated, your points worth consideration. My thoughts regarding the establishment of a water rescue group extend beyond the kayakers.

Jim, a close personal friend, an experienced outdoorsman, in great shape, died in what can only be called a fluke. I will not elaborate upon the details, but suffice it to say, the same set of facts will probably not repeat for a hundred years.

The establishment of an effective water rescue group seems clearly necessary in an area where river recreation is being expanded and tourists/visitors courted. Trained personnel available in emergency situations seems the civic, as well as responsible, course of action.

Your comment regarding paying for a service aiding only 1 percent of the population (the kayakers), begs the question of why we have the fire department rescue cats, why the police stop to help motorists, why helicopters are used to hunt lost hikers.
A simplistic answer might be that we care.

Extend 'change' to Afghanistan

I, as do most Americans, believe that we should be supporting the troops, while at the same time believing it is the president's responsibility to provide for the police action and get us out of Afghanistan.

We know that President Obama did not start this military action. We do know he sought and won the office that can control the life-and-death events of American warriors on foreign soil. His own military adviser wants 40,000 additional troops. It is reported he is going to approve 30,000.

He will speak at West Point Tuesday. We will learn the fate of many of those officers, troops and their families. We will learn the strategy, the "guesstimated" cost, the proposed tax base to continue support of the action, and the new definition of "exit strategy."

Mr. Obama ran a platform of "change." I hope.

God bless the troops, their families and America. We need it.

Upon being hired in my county, we developed and integrated lesson plans to enhance problem solving skills. Lest I bore you, I suggest we used art to teach color, shape, size; we used various products to teach smell, texture, size, volume; animals to teach responsibility and music to teach speech , fun, holidays and rhythm. Some of us would take nature walks to begin to tie the lessons together.

There was a wonderful seed store to which we could walk, see seeds, beg some, return to class and plant them. There was a grocery store that allowed us to tour to correlate foods and their various ways to be processed. Reading skills were reinforced. We did the same concepts with other teachings, including animal species, math, and visits to the public service organizations.

Somebody did a study, deciding we needed to have 360 minutes of class time. (You do the math) We needed an expensive reading program and testing daily. Maybe you were 10 years old.

More time in class. More time sitting. Higher test scores? Less recess, quick lunch, minimal PE, give up rest period. Fast restroom breaks.

Children on the bus at 5? Home at dark? Teachers in at 7a.m., out at 6 p.m., unless there is "in-service"? Go for it, Prez!

I retired. Probably a good idea.

I read Mr. Adam C. Powell's declarations that "There is a moral deficiency surging ... people who oppose health care reform is proof of how callous we've become as a nation" ... " People are so concerned ... why they have to pay for their neighbors insurance that they forget our social responsibility to one another" ... "We owe it to one another..." Finally there was his closing statement -- "To the wealthy( no definition ), don't hoard your treasures at the cost of the working man."

I maintain there is a social strata which believes they are entitled to do nothing for society, but society should support their lives. In all of the discussions regarding what the nation should provide, I have read nothing about the responsibility of the recipients.

I suggest Mr. Powell pay the insurance for one family. Pick a woman with maybe seven children and no husband (just a boyfriend) or pick an illegal alien who is sending money home. Powell might also pay their auto insurance while he is at it.

Emergency rooms are inundated. I have been once in the past two decades. I waited five hours, at midnight, in great pain, while the indigent were served. No, I'm not special, but my insurance will certainly help to keep the ER open.

I'm just a poor retired teacher. I'm trying hard not to be a drain on Mr. Powell, the affluent, or the nation. No thanks necessary, Mr. Powell.

Statements raise real concerns

Dear Barbara Evans,

We all would probably agree that the "average citizen" has not read the full 1,000-plus pages of the proposed health plan. Your assertion that many are motivated by certain TV news programs and speakers disregards the point that information from the government can be propagandized just as easily as that from opponents to the Obama bill.

I have had civil discussions with many, from Texas to Wisconsin, Georgia to Kentucky. I have discussed it with grandmothers, PhDs, millionaires, a retired high ranking military officer. Some would suggest that if one disagrees, one is a racist. I know people of color who do not agree with the plan, and I have a decades-old friend, Caucasian, retired, who is fully behind the president and the plan.

Two statements have continued to trouble me. The president has publicly stated that it may take 10 or more years to make the enacted plan a one-provider system; meaning the government. The other is when I heard Nancy Pelosi say there would be "caps on payments, and no caps on benefits." To me it means: The government will set costs to be paid out for a particular benefit, and the government will stipulate the definition of a benefit.

One might surmise that the two statements taken together mean total governmental takeover. I don't consider myself "hysterically ignorant," but I do agree we will "all lose if we don't begin checking our facts and checking our attitudes."

Blue only color that mattered

Last year, while walking my dog, I noted an intruder in my back yard at 11:30 p.m. With help from my neighbor, we contained him until the police arrived. We did not shoot him, hit him or otherwise abuse the African-American man, because my neighbor and I are reasonable, law-abiding Caucasian-Americans.

He and I were only interested in protecting my property, and possibly my person.

The Montgomery police arrived promptly. They were very professional toward us as they disarmed us for safety. They took the intruder to the street, and began to question the young man.

They were very respectful toward him, and I believe went well above what could have transpired. They even called several cell numbers for him to try to establish his identity. My neighbor and I were privy to the whole situation. Only when it became evident the intruder might have a mental problem did they place him in a vehicle and transport him downtown for safety and identification.

I did not sign a trespass warrant, and as far as I know, the police had more reason to protect him than arrest him.

The arriving officer was Caucasian-American, dressed in blue. The supervisor and other officers were African-American, dressed in blue.

If I have another problem late at night, I sure hope all those same blue uniforms show up.

I confess I did not watch the spectacle of the memorial for Michael Jackson. I saw a few snippets, but they are now intertwined in my mind, after the insufferable reruns and loops of various statements.

The sound bites I seem to see the most were the ones declaring MJ the greatest entertainer in the past 2009 years; he was not weird, we are; and he is the reason for the civil rights advancements by all people of color, including the president of the United States.

A personal observation is the obvious exploitation of the young girl alleged to be his daughter, who knew he was dead for 12 days, had never been seen in public, never spoken to the press or public, never lived a normal life, being paraded to the stage to make a eulogy statement and immediately hugged and removed. I felt for her, so much.

I do not speak ill of the dead. MJ was a consummate singer, an entertainer and a very good impromptu dancer.

I will speak ill of the living. Boy! What a bunch of vultures.

OK, so what do I know, an old semi-Caucasian who can barely slow-dance and is even less talented at singing?

Immediate gratification at root of problems

Many of us older folks have lived long enough to go from large floor radios to video cameras in computers and the instantaneous transmission of news and events of interest, along with highly annoying cell phones. We also find ourselves as the elders who have helped initiate and perpetuate credit.

Now Utopia is crumbling. Lay-away has come full circle. There is an old saying about paying the piper. We are the purveyors of the attitudes and actions which have fostered the economic climate and current severe downturn of stable growth.

Regardless of one's political leanings, we must accept responsibility for the basic fact that immediate gratification has come about to bite us in the derriere. To quote Michael Douglas in a famous role, "Greed is good." If not greed, then maybe gluttony or envy.

Americans generally are not opposed to capitalism or supply and demand. I believe both concepts are the most valid means of economic success.

What happened ? Credit cards? Home loans? Unions? Foreign imports? Medical costs? Aliens? Corporate greed? Wall Street? Oil moguls? Welfare? Congress? The war? Us?

I can attest that I have overcome the impulse to be extravagant. I understand that I live better than probably 99 percent of the world. I eat regularly, I sleep warmly while enjoying the freedom of choice, friends, travel, personal beliefs and alliances. I am American.

'Divas' delightful ASF production

"The Three Divas" are gone. If you failed to see the production, you missed as professional and stirring an afternoon of music and talent, as you could ever expect to experience. Bravo and magnificent are the only two words which come close.

The ASF has produced "Crowns," "Menopause" and now "The Three Divas," which stirred my soul. Thank you ladies. You are splendid.

If I may be allowed a segue way, I apologize to the two ladies seated in front of me, who moved to adjacent seats. I do theater and I appreciate brilliant performances. I do get vocal as well as involved. Actors want honest audiences who let them know the work is appreciated. This audience was obviously appreciative. I apologize, not for my actions, but that you got the luck of the draw.

Lastly, a pox on the boorish, rude, ignorant persons who continuously checked their cell phones, especially during the finale. I am dumbfounded that the cast was one of the best ever showcased at ASF while the boors are so important they are checking messages. Stay home.

Once again, bravo ladies.

Prudent ones asked to fund bailout

I am an American. I am the American to whom the president of the United States spoke. I am the American who bought a modest home three years ago, pays his mortgage, pay additional money toward the principal, paid off his credit card and spends frugally, while saving a significant amount of money. It took me several years to get more intelligent.

Our prez said the system failed, yet later said, "We have the best system of all."

He wishes for me to be one of the people who bails out the millionaires, politicians and speculators, who, I am sure, will not suffer. He wants me to do this, he wants my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren to do this, while saving the United States of America.

Beware this dangerous concept of economics

Mr. Obama recently proposed that, given the power, he would take money from an oil company's alleged excessive profits, and give the American citizens an additional $1,000 as another stimulus infusion.

It seems to me that the message is that Americans are hurting because of profit motive, excessive dividends and greedy corporations.

I suggest this is a dangerous concept of economics. Personally, I am not enamored with either party's nominee.

I am retired and doing my little part to try to reduce blatant consumerism and energy waste. I do not blame huge successful corporations for the current state of the American economy.

I am concerned with the tremendous expense of police actions being fought in the Middle East, and the fact that few, if any, retail items currently have a "Made in USA" sticker when turned upside down.

Supply and demand suggests a corporation prospers because of public support through sales, service and investments. The power of controlling profit margin already exists.

No politician should have the power to decide the percentage of success any private corporation is allowed to attain for the owners, workers and also stockholders.

May I respectfully suggest, that if Mr. Obama is elected, he simply allow me to figure out my 1040 and subtract $1,000 from the bottom line of total taxes owed. Let the IRS scale back, not some American supplier.

Judge Gamble left admirable legacy

Judge Arthur E. Gamble's recent death, caused by the insidious Parkinson's disease, diminished the city of Greenville and the nation as a whole.

Judge Gamble was a man of great stature as well as statute. He was of "The Greatest Generation." Like so many, he interrupted his life to voluntarily defend his country as a Navy pilot. He returned to Greenville to fulfill a stellar career as a lawyer and later a judge.

He barely survived a dastardly and cowardly attempt to assassinate him with an explosive device under his car during the turbulent days of civil rights voter registration.

Parkinson's reduced his body and his strength, but it cannot remove the memory of a towering, handsome man of superior character with beautiful silver hair. He was every bit the image he presented.

Bub Gamble was a genuine, unassuming human, who loved his family, friends and the greater community, and in return he reaped their undying love and respect.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have known such a fine gentleman and to remain friends with his loving wife of 60 years, Bobbie, and family.

His memorial service was a celebration of a life well lived, a legacy fulfilled and for a person who loved, and was unfailingly loved in return. We know he is resting in peace, as can his family. They can rest assured the angels were sent to escort him. He once again flies high.

Government can inflict abuse also

Ellen Goodman's "Destroying village" column in the Advertiser, concerning the Eldorado religious sect, was evidently another attempt to justify mass governmental intervention in the lives of citizens.

Many of us have watched the interviews with the parents and heard the original arguments, which motivated the Texas authorities. One argument stipulated that because the compound was gated, it therefore constituted "the home" for all the individuals, allowing for a mass roundup, removal and redistribution of all the children.

Ms. Goodman seemed to be reasonable and balanced, until the last paragraph. She declared that "Eldorado is not a lifestyle. It's a pedophile ring." Goodman and others continue to cite some pregnancy numbers regarding 14- to 17-year-old females. This often repeated alleged fact is at least partial justification for the mass removal of 400-plus children, some possibly over 18 years of age.

Obviously no government is going to go after every 14- to 17-year-old girl who becomes pregnant or goes to the health department with an STD. They will go to the well-baby clinic and begin receiving public assistance.

The Texas attack will take years to settle and divert mega-resources to defend a blanket indictment, possibly initiated by a false report.

No rational human, much less American, could possibly condone child abuse, literal or statute driven. We also should not tolerate governmental abuse of power and due process.

Guilt by association or birth is a dangerous concept, especially in the hands of armed authorities, and possibly the self-proclaimed do gooders.

Arguing gun control in the Advertiser is a bit like the continuing saga of religion, evolution and red light cameras. It is obvious , if not utterly stupid, to think that a total ban of guns on campus is, and has been, safer than a lunatic with a Uzi and no one to stop him.

I am willing to argue that there are friendly weapons on campus, if not before, then surely now. I personally have knowledge of licensed weapons being available in school situations. I know that if an adult with a legal permit stops the slaughter of innocent, unarmed citizens in a campus setting, (particularly children), by killing the perpetrator, I will gladly be on the grand jury chosen to decide upon an indictment.

I read the Advertiser editorial "Law, not religion, rules in court." I am one of those who has always believed religion does not mix in law and public education.

I was in education for several decades, thus I know that argument. I also realize many sincere individuals believe the public schools should be responsible for the religious rearing of all students, plus we should believe that all court proceedings should be Christian.

I am sincerely curious about WWJD. Did Jesus hold a prayer circle before he went in the temple of the money lenders? What does religion have to do with the prosecution of a person arrested while robbing my home or auto?

Should the probate office hold a prayer circle for driver or marriage licenses? (Well, maybe)

If I sue someone in small claims court, I really don't want a judge to pray over a decision. It isn't the principle, it's the money. Just imagine Judge Judy saying grace while calling a defendant an idiot. Perfect.

'Idiot's' deadly action sadly not uncommon

At 12:05 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2008, I lay in bed listening to fireworks laced with the sounds of semi-automatic gunfire. It came from two different directions. I knew it was not so far away, and could travel to my windows or even through a brick wall. I hoped it went straight up.

I awoke to the news that one round did not go straight up. I am so sad that a child is the undeserving victim of a random act of total stupidity and disregard for human life and safety.

I taught at the Gibbs Village Head Start Center in the community center when it opened in the late 1960s. We made home visits and I had no fear in the evenings as I walked the streets to check about ill or absent children.

I was the teacher. They liked me. There was mutual respect and apparent safe surroundings. I had started at Madison Park with Mrs. Etra Seay, and also felt no trepidation, as I visited there.
I am retired now, but must admit I do not understand why things have gone to the current status quo. I worked with some wonderful, dedicated individuals who tried, as did I, to promote respect and social pride. I wish I had been more effective and am sorry I was not more so.

I don't blame the city, the police or the neighbors. I blame one idiot. The only problem is there is another one waiting. I urge us all to not have let this child die in vain.

Avoiding Chinese products not easy

Walter Jackson has a good idea regarding the purchase of Chinese products. He said: "Do your best to pass on it. How hard can that be?"

Well, Mr. J, the answer is blowing in the wind. Before the Fourth of July, (an obviously holy, wholly, USA celebration), I went to a local hobby chain store.

Lots and lots of red, white and blue; nutcracker Uncle Sams; bunting, flags, paper plates and picnic stuff, all patriotic items to celebrate a very important historical fact, and an enduring philosophy. Can you say "Made in China"?

Recently I went to a chain department store trying to score a bull's eye of a purchase for a wedding shower gift. In the kitchen department, I did find one item from Taiwan. Care to guess what continent the rest came from?

Three-party system would be beneficial

S. Lee Ryals and several other avid Republican zealots are indicative of the people who would support the continued presence of American troops upon foreign soil.

These troops are dying for what many Americans now believe is a failed mission -- ill-conceived, ill-funded and ill-supported. Much of the same can be said about the economy, which has now gone $160 billion brighter red.

Many Americans consider themselves independent thinkers, just as intelligent and patriotic, if not more so, than the average party member of either political group.

We know we don't want a hundred-year war. We know we don't want open borders, plus we don't want amnesty. We know we want: a stable economy, our government to "butt out" of other countries' politics, strong control of aliens and we know we want any loss of young lives to be in defense of our nation, not for oil or despots.

If you believe America, as a political nation, has failed to be responsive to Americans, then you have an obligation to vote for the person most likely to strive to achieve homeland security, strong borders, economic balance, and a strong military to defend us and other freedom-loving countries.

It would be better if we had a strong three-party system, but we don't. Listen carefully, weigh the issues and think what the next eight years can bring. We know the last eight.

Mr. Sheldon Jeames is, in my less than humble opinion, inaccurate regarding two of his assumptions regarding "English-only" testing for the privilege of driving.

Many of us think it is any alien who should assimilate. Many of us take offense at having to "Press 1." Let somebody else "Press 2."

Mr. Jeames is also incorrect concerning "traffic light language." He might quote "Star Trek," but he apparently has never seen Jeff Bridges in "Starman": "Red means stop, green means go and yellow means go faster."

Benefits of pre-K questioned

It appears that no one else is concerned about the Advertiser's pro-editorial concerning pre-kindergarten schooling, funding and alleged benefits of state-instituted 4-year-old education.
One of the stated purposes was to teach children to sit and focus. This was "to get them ready for first grade." I personally have watched pre-K daycare, teaching K-level concepts, so they will "be ready" for kindergarten.

Now we can teach 3-year-olds pre-K so they will be ready for pre-K and then K. Thus logically we can begin forming 2-year-olds into organized groups so they can learn how to move to academic daycare to pre-K, then to K. Need I go further?

Regardless of terms or jargon, kindergarten had a "pass/fail" element when I retired in 2001. Is it possible a 3-year-old could fail staying in the lines, or fail scribbling, the beginning of writing and artistic expression?

Could it be "Child is unable to sit for 10 minutes"? "Child is unable to focus upon concepts of time and seasons."? "Child is unable to duplicate a square."?

"The Great Society," a term from decades long past, brought about the "womb to tomb" concept of an ideal social organization. Seems to me that to governmentally foster this upon 3- and 4-year-olds suggests that parents do not need to function as the first teachers, while increasingly early institutionalization of the young is the answer to society's problems.

Fostering religion not schools' role

William Pilati (in response to Dick Brewbaker) and I may be the only two former public school students in history who have grown up still believing it is not the responsibility of a public institution or government employee to foster religion upon a captive group, such as students in a classroom.

I cannot understand, to this day, the attitude of the teacher at Lanier in 1956 who had me suspended for three days, because I moved and whispered during the "Bible reading" session. It was to assist a student who had a minor problem, and was not at all disruptive. I did not return to her class.

I fully concur with Mr. Pilati's feelings because I knew no class I ever attended would have any mention of the Jewish faith, which corresponded to the religion of about half of my family and relatives. I suppose the deceased teacher, in her own attempt at admonishing my scrawny soul, believed humiliating me in front of my peers and kicking me out class would save my soul from eternal damnation.

I do not wish to speak ill of the dead, but I suppose she would twirl like a rotisserie if she could witness a contemporary service in the newer evolution of religious Christian services. I did learn a lesson in her class. May she rest in peace.

I currently drive daily to accomplish two hours of part-time work. All of the mileage is from Taylor Road down Vaughn Road and the East Boulevard to McGehee Road.

Since gasoline is now at $3.50 for premium, one would think driving habits would begin to change. No such luck. Tailgaters abound, turn signal usage is sparse, long lines at drive-throughs when a walk-in is faster, blocked intersections at critical turns, and of course red light roulette.

I am no longer amazed, at least weekly, to slowly pass a rear-end wreck only to look in my rearview mirror to see a cell phone user smoking a cigarette attempting to kiss my rear bumper.

Heaven forbid I should drive the speed limit. Just forget the 10 mph distance rule. (As an aside: don't think women do not know the use of the middle digit).

OK. I am through venting. Let me go and seize the day, my steering wheel and of course my insurance papers.
